Switzerland Digital SLR Camera Sales
The digital camera triumph in Switzerland has been fulfilled: With sinking prices, the compact digital camera market achieved another successful quarter. Any high resolution digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera that has a positive review is the shooting star among digital equipment.
Compact cameras
In 2007 over 800,000 compact cameras were sold in Switzerland. That was a record. – despite increasing pressure from digital SLRs, this market continued to grow and a high rate.
Over the last 3 years trends towards high resolution cameras have clearly continued: 48% of cameras sold have a 7-8 megapixel resolution. Sales of high-performance 8-9 megapixel cameras also increased significantly over the course of 2007.
Today we can however observe an end to the "pixel madness”, with a stabilization at 7-9 megapixels.
Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras
Digital SLRs are still the Swiss consumers' darling and continue to have positive DSLR reviews: A growth of almost 40% in comparison to 2006 speaks for itself. That is tremendous growth. Quickly sinking prices in the past have now stabilized. During the first 3 months of 2008, GfK has even observed an increase in the average price. In March 2008, 70% of SLRs sold were equipped with a 10-11 MP chip. The digital SLR trend will continue in 2008, at the expense of compact cameras. Based on new market entries in the upper price segment, average prices - in contrast to compact cameras - will also be kept up.
Overall the peak in the Swiss digital camera market appears to have passed.
