DSLR camera review of the Olympus Evolt E-520

Ratings and reviews of the Olympus Evolt E-520 DSLR camera have some of the following pros, cons, and comments.

Pros:  This DSLR camera is the successor to the E-510. The E-520 comes with a bigger LCD at 2.7 inches. A very ergonomic camera grip. Live view is simple to access. The viewfinder has very good magnification. The E-520's image stabilization comes with three modes, which is a first for sensor-based stabilization. The E-520 comes with 20 scene select modes. Shadow Adjustment Technology is also standard.

Cons: Has only 3 AF points. The menus are not layed out very effectively, and some of the controls to use some of the more advanced features are not as user friendly. The viewfinder is tunnel visioned. Below average low light performance and white balance.

Comments : Olympus EVolt E-520 is marketed to compete against other entry-level DSLRs. It includes a high number of preset and automatic modes, while continuing to allow in-depth tweaking for those who want manual control.

Additional Olympus Evolt E-520 review comments :

-The Olympus E-520 is a good digital SLR camera with a great feature-set that will perform many actions very well. That being said, our reviews show that there are competing DSLR cameras for a similar price that offer increased dynamic range, better viewfinders, more flexible RAW files, better high-ISO performance, and somewhat more detailed and sharper images.

-Our picture taken with the Olympus Evolt E520 were pretty much the same as those taking with the E-420. This is not really surprising as both DSLR cameras have the same image processing system and sensor. Our review of test shows in outdoor lighting were colorful and bright, although some of the picture highlight details were lost in very contrast situations.

-So while it is disappointing that Olympus did not make any major updates or changes, like improving the AF system, fitting a flip-out screen, boosting the resolution, or enlarging the viewfinder, that just goes to show that it is a testament to the earlier Olympus E-510’s specs that by making just a few small changes and enhancements, the our reviews show the Olympus E-520 DSLR remains a serious top contender.

Compare to the Canon EOS 450D Rebel XSi. The Canon model 450D would be the Evolt 520s main competitor.

Compare to the Pentax K200D. The Pentax is about the same price as the Olympus, and they have several similarities.

Compare to the Sony DSLR A-300. The Sony A-300 is the main competitor from Sony for the Evolt 520.
