Canon EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi Review

Here are some of the comments, pros, and cons from numerous reviews of the Canon EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi as pulled from numerous websites.

Pros: Great image improvement over the Digital Rebel XT. Very high quality image and pictures. 10.1 Megapixels. 9 AF points. Has very good battery life. Fine performance at higher ISO settings. Shoot many more photos in burst mode - up to 27 high-quality images. The older models were 14. The Digital Rebel XTi LCD display is bigger, making for better viewing and is a good fit for the menu interface. The menus are easier to navigate.

Cons : Not as fast as the Digital Rebel XT. A slight delay in picture taking. No live view feature. No spot meter. Not as versatile as other entry level, basic DSLRs. The lens and sensor do not handle movement and motion extremely well.

Comments: Overall, Canon 400D Digital Rebel XTi is a solid, entry level DSLR. However, the consensus is that there are not enough improvements over the Digital Rebel XT to spend the money to upgrade. Many of the features between the models are the same. The XTi does have higher resolution and picture quality, which is its main selling point over the Digital Rebel XT. However, the XTi does not come with some of the latest bells and whistles of its competitors. For example, it doesn’t come with live view or a spot meter, which may be useful in certain lighting.

Additional Canon EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi review comments :

-The image quality of the Canon 400D is excellent. This camera continues the industry leading SLR results that Canon has had for the last several years. No breakthrough in low noise at the highest ISO settings, but the ISO 400 is almost noiseless and this can be used as your everyday speed. Noise does not become an issue until ISO 1600 and even some users may object to that. I would summarize my review by saying the Canon EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi is the most DSLR that you can buy for the money that Canon has offered. In its price range, there is not a competing camera that can touch it.

-Photos we took using the Canon 400D were stunning; the images were clear and crisp, and the colors were reproduced accurately. Using the telephoto lens at 300mm, we did observe much blurriness that was caused by camera shake. But we used a tripod which helped considerably.

-As with the XT, our review of this DSLR shows the Canon XTi provides excellent image quality. There is very little noise up through ISO 400. Using ISO 800 through 1,600 (the maximum speed available) there is minimal noise. In general, an increase in resolution can occasionally result in noisy pictures, but Canon has done a good job in increasing the resolution on the XTi sensor without allowing noise to increase. The two extra  megapixels are appreciated, and they allow much more cropping flexibility and output.

Compare to the Canon 350D Rebel XT. The Rebel XT is an was the digital SLR model that was replaced by the XTi.

Compare to the Nikon D40. The D40 is another rival of the Canon Rebel XTi, however the D40 is an older DSLR camera.

Compare to the Nikon D60. The Nikon D60, as well as the D40 above, are both competitors to the Canon 400D Rebel XTi.

Compare to the Nikon D80. The Nikon D80 is the primary rival from the Nikon line to the XTi.

Compare to the Olympus Evolt E-510. The Canon 400D and the Olympus E510 are natural rivals.

Compare to the Sony DSLR-A100. This Sony DSLR is the Sony model that best competes with the XTi.
